In affiliate marketing, the terms "Merchant" and "Brand" are commonly used, each serving a unique role.

What is a merchant?

Merchants are businesses that work with affiliates to promote and sell their products or services through affiliate marketing. Merchants can also be known as retailers or advertisers.

These companies, range from small businesses to major corporations and span various industries, such as e-commerce, finance, and travel.

What is a brand?

Brands are the businesses that own and produce products.

Just like merchants, these companies, range from small businesses to major corporations and span various industries such as e-commerce, finance, and travel.

Merchant vs. Brand

In many instances, one merchant may sell products from many brands. For example, Walmart (merchant) sells products from Apple (brand), Colgate (brand) and Pepsi (brand).

In other cases, the merchant exclusively sells products from their own brand. Take Apple, for example—it acts as both the merchant and the brand, as Apple (merchant) sells Apple (brand) products.
